Notary or lawyer?

The main difference is that in order to become a notary, a lawyer must obtain additional qualifications. Therefore, most notaries are also lawyers. The main function of a notary public is to issue certificates and verify signatures and documents.

Another difference between notaries and lawyers is the fees, which vary considerably. While a solicitor’s fee ranges from around £10 to £25 per document, a notary’s fee ranges from £50 to £100 for the same task.

Purpose of certification by a notary

Documents submitted for apostille must be certified by a seal of a recognized organization or signed by an official or a lawyer, without which they cannot be legalized. Certain documents, such as birth or marriage certificates or court documents that already contain the necessary stamps/signatures, may not contain this verification.

Among the documents that must be verified by a lawyer in order to obtain an apostille are academic certificates, personal documents, company documents, etc., which are not usually signed by an official person.

Why pay more for a notary’s signature?

There are cases when your document must be signed by a notary, and the signature of a proxy does not apply. A lawyer’s signature should be sufficient for basic verification.
